Skip the USA: New Dog Border Crossing Rules & Your Invitation to a Cozy BC Winter

Planning a winter camping with your dog? If your destination is the USA, be aware that new regulations for bringing dogs across the border came into effect on August 1st, 2024. Here are they:

1. Age: Your dog must be at least six months old to enter the United States. This rule aims to protect young puppies who are more susceptible to diseases.

2. Rabies Vaccination: Valid rabies vaccination records are mandatory. Depending on your dog’s vaccination history and the countries it has visited in the past six months, there might be specific requirements regarding the type of vaccine, number of doses, and timing of the vaccination.

3. Microchip: Your dog should have a microchip that is ISO compliant and meets international standards for readability. This will help identify your pet in case it gets lost or separated from you during the journey.

Additional Requirements: In certain cases, additional documentation or health certificates might be necessary. For instance, if your dog is coming from a country with a high risk of rabies, it may need to undergo a rabies titer test to confirm its immunity.

Exceptions: There are some exceptions to these rules, such as for service dogs and dogs participating in competitions or exhibitions. However, even in these cases, certain conditions and documentation may still be required.

We recommend that you consult these official sources well in advance of your trip to ensure you have all the necessary information and documentation to comply with the latest regulations.
